Why call a locksmith
The Car Does Not Have to Go Anywhere
A dealership needs your vehicle on their lot. If the keys are gone, that means a tow before anybody has even started work.
The tow is often the largest single line on a dealer key replacement, and it is the one that disappears entirely when the work happens where the car is parked.
That is the practical case. Keys are cut and programmed at the vehicle, in a driveway or a car park, usually in under an hour for common models. Pricing is normally well below dealer rates for the same result.
What we will not do is pretend that covers everything. Some vehicles, particularly certain European makes and some very recent models, are locked to dealer only programming. If yours is one of them you will be told on the phone before anyone drives out, rather than after a wasted callout.
Every job starts with proof that the vehicle is yours. Photo ID and the title or registration in your name, every time, no exceptions. A locksmith who cuts car keys without checking that is a locksmith who will do it for whoever asks about yours.

Year, Make and Model
This is most of the answer. A 2009 pickup and a 2023 SUV with proximity entry are entirely different jobs with entirely different key costs, even though both are described as needing a car key.
Whether Any Key Exists
Having one working key and wanting a spare is the cheap version. All keys lost means starting from nothing, which takes longer and costs more on almost every vehicle. The gap between the two is large enough to be worth planning around.
Proof the Car Is Yours
Photo ID plus title or registration matching it. This is not negotiable and it is the single clearest test of whether you are dealing with a legitimate locksmith. Have it on hand and nothing slows down.

Can you make a car key with no key at all?
On most vehicles yes, at the car, without a tow. It is called an all keys lost job and it takes longer than cutting a spare because the key has to be generated and paired from scratch. Proof of ownership is required before anything begins. See car key replacement.
Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealership?
Usually, and the tow is a large part of why. A dealer needs the vehicle on their lot, which means towing it there when no key exists. There are exceptions, particularly on certain European makes and some very new models, and you will be told when yours is one. See locksmith or dealership.
What do I need to prove the car is mine?
Photo ID and the title or registration in the same name. If the vehicle is in a company name, documentation linking you to that company. This is not bureaucracy. It is the difference between a licensed locksmith and someone who will cut a key to your car for a stranger.
Do you work on every make and model?
No, and anyone claiming otherwise is guessing. Most common vehicles on Oklahoma roads are covered. Some manufacturers restrict key programming to dealers, and some very recent models are not yet supported by aftermarket equipment. What are your hours?

A spare for a common model is often under an hour at the vehicle. All keys lost takes longer, and some vehicles have a mandatory security wait built into the programming process that nobody can shorten. You are told the expected time when the quote is given.
