What rekeying actually is
New Keys, Same Locks
The pins inside the cylinder get rearranged to match a new key. Every key cut to the old pattern stops working the moment the cylinder goes back on the door.
You are not paying for hardware. You are paying for the twenty minutes of skilled work that makes four missing keys worthless.
That is the whole reason rekeying exists as a service. A commercial lever set can run well over a hundred dollars a door before labour. If the hardware on the door is sound, replacing it to solve a key problem is money spent on the wrong thing.
Cylinders are repinned on site with a field kit. No lock leaves the property and no door sits open waiting for parts. For a building with several entry points that matters, because a rekey is usually happening precisely when you are least willing to leave the place unsecured.

Tenant Turnover
A suite changes hands and nobody can prove how many keys the last tenant had cut over three years. This is the most common call we take.
Staff Departure
Someone with keys to the back door leaves, and the exit was not on good terms. Rekeying that night is cheaper than the alternative.
Lost or Stolen Keys

Decide This Before Any Pins Move
Rekeying is not one decision. How the building is keyed afterwards is the part that you live with for the next several years.
Keyed Alike
Every door takes the same key. Simple, cheap, and right for a single tenant business where everyone who has access has access to everything. It stops being right the moment you need to let a cleaner in without giving them the office.
Keyed Differently
Each door gets its own key. Maximum separation, and a large key ring. Suits a property where a handful of doors need genuinely independent access and nobody needs to open all of them.
Master Keyed
One master opens everything, change keys open only their own door, and a common area key covers shared entrances. This is what most multi tenant buildings should be on, and it has to be designed before the work starts, not bolted on later.

Compatibility confirmed first

Cylinders come off, get repinned, and go straight back on. The building is never left open and no hardware leaves the property.

Each key is cycled through the locks it should open and the ones it should not. You leave with a written record of what was rekeyed and how many keys were cut.

How long does rekeying a commercial building take?
A single cylinder is a matter of minutes. A building is driven by door count and by how mixed the hardware is. A dozen compatible cylinders keyed alike is comfortably a same day job. The same twelve doors on four different manufacturers with a master hierarchy to design is a different piece of work, and we tell you which one you have before quoting.
Is rekeying cheaper than replacing the locks?
Almost always, because you are paying for labour rather than hardware. Commercial lever sets and deadbolts are the expensive part of a lock, and rekeying leaves them on the door. Replacement earns its cost when the hardware is worn, damaged, or under grade for the traffic it takes.
Will the old keys definitely stop working?
Yes. That is the entire point. Once the pins are changed, a key cut to the old pattern will not turn the cylinder. This is why rekeying is the correct response to missing keys, while changing who holds the keys is not.
Can you key several doors to one key?
Yes, provided the cylinders are compatible. That is called keying alike and it is a common request from managers carrying six keys for four doors. Where different people need different access, a master key system is the better structure.
Do you rekey high security and restricted cylinders?
Restricted systems use patented blanks, so keys can only be cut with authorisation from whoever holds the system. If yours is on one, bring the paperwork and we work within it. Do you need to see the building before quoting?
Not always. For a straightforward count of similar doors, the address and the number of cylinders is usually enough for a firm number on the phone. For mixed hardware or anything involving a master hierarchy, a walkthrough comes first, and the estimate for it is free.
