We Confirm the Car Is Yours
Photo ID, and registration or insurance documents matching it where they are reachable. If everything is locked inside, we work through what can be confirmed at the scene. Verification is not skipped because it is inconvenient, and a locksmith who skips it for you skips it for the person eyeing your car next.
Opened Without Damage
Modern vehicles have airbags, wiring and sensors packed into the door, so this is careful work rather than fast work. On most vehicles it is achievable without leaving a mark. Where a particular vehicle makes that unrealistic, you are told before we start rather than shown the damage after.
Then the Underlying Problem

How it happens
The Usual Causes
Keys On the Seat
Door closed with the fob inside. The classic, and usually the quickest to resolve.
Keys In the Boot
Hands full, keys go in the trunk with the shopping, lid closes. Extremely common.
Fob Battery Died
The car will not respond. Many vehicles hide a mechanical key inside the fob and a door keyhole under a cap.
Key Snapped in the Door
A worn key finally gives out. The broken piece comes out and the lock is checked afterwards.
Automatic Relock
Some vehicles relock themselves after a set time if no door is opened. It catches people out constantly.
Key Lost Entirely
Gone with a bag or dropped somewhere. Opening is step one and a new key is step two.
Frozen Lock
Rare here but it happens in an ice storm. Force is what breaks a key off in a frozen cylinder.

Can you open it if the key is lost rather than locked inside?
Yes, but opening the door does not let you drive away. A lost key means a replacement cut and programmed at the vehicle, which is a separate job with its own price. Both are quoted up front so there is no surprise once the door is open. See car key replacement.
Should I just break a window?
Not unless someone is inside and at risk, in which case call 911 first and follow what they tell you. Otherwise a broken window usually costs considerably more than the lockout, leaves glass through the interior, and can affect sensors and trim in the door.
