Mechanical Keys
Older vehicles with no chip. Cut to code and it works, nothing to program. The cheapest and quickest key there is, and increasingly rare on the road.
Transponder Keys
A chip in the head of the key that the vehicle has to recognise before it will start. Cutting alone is not enough, and this is where programming enters the picture. Standard on most vehicles from the late nineties onward.
Remote Head and Smart Keys
The remote is built into the key, or there is no blade at all and the car starts on a button with the fob in your pocket. More capability, more cost, and proximity systems in particular sit at the top of the range.

Year, make and model
The single biggest factor in the price. Give it on the phone and you get a real figure rather than a range that moves once someone sees the car.
The VIN if you have it
Usually visible through the windscreen on the driver's side, and on your registration. It lets us confirm the exact key your vehicle takes before loading the van.
Whether any key still works
Even a key that opens the door but will not start the engine changes the job. Say what you have, including the broken and the unreliable ones.
Where the car is
The work happens at the vehicle, so we need to reach it. Driveway, car park level, or nearest cross street.

Can you make a key if I have lost all of them?

Why is a car key so expensive now?
Because it is no longer just a piece of cut metal. A modern key contains a transponder chip, often a remote, and on proximity systems a complete wireless module, all of which has to be paired to your specific vehicle. The blank itself and the programming equipment are both significant costs.
Do I need to bring the car to you?
No. C&R is mobile and the work is done where the vehicle is parked, which is the main advantage over a dealership when no working key exists. There is no shop to visit and no tow to arrange.
Can old keys be cancelled if mine were stolen?
On most vehicles yes. Existing keys can be erased from the vehicle's memory so they will no longer start it, and new keys programmed in their place. If your keys were taken along with something showing your address, this is worth doing promptly.
