What is actually happening
The Car Has to Recognise the Key
Since the late nineties, most vehicles will not start unless the key identifies itself to the immobiliser first. Cutting the metal only solves half the problem.
This is why a key cut at a hardware store opens the door and then does nothing when you turn it. The cut is right. The car simply does not know the key.
Inside the head of the key there is a small chip. When you turn the ignition or press start, the vehicle checks it against the identities it has stored. If there is no match, the engine is prevented from running. That system is the main reason vehicle theft rates fell the way they did, and it is also the reason keys stopped being cheap.
Programming is the process of adding a new identity to that stored list, and it is done by connecting to the vehicle. It is not something a blank key arrives with, and it is not something that can be done in advance without the car present.
The same applies to remote fobs and to proximity systems where there is no blade at all. Different technology, same principle: the vehicle has to be told to accept it.

With one good key in hand, adding another is comparatively straightforward on many vehicles. With none, the process is longer and needs more capability, and some models impose a fixed security wait during it that cannot be shortened by anyone.
The Manufacturer
Systems differ enormously between makes. Some are routine for an equipped locksmith, some require specific tooling, and a few are restricted to dealers entirely. Year, make and model on the phone is what settles which group yours falls into.
The Age of the Vehicle
Broadly, the newer the vehicle the tighter the security and the more likely that aftermarket support lags behind. Very recent models are the ones most often not yet supported, and you will be told that before a callout rather than after.

Why does my new key open the door but not start the car?
Because it has been cut but not programmed. The blade operates the door lock mechanically, while starting the engine requires the vehicle to recognise the transponder chip in the key head. Until that identity is added to the vehicle, the engine will not run.
Can I program a key myself?
A small number of older vehicles have an onboard procedure that works when you already have two working keys, and if yours is one of them we will tell you rather than charge for it. The large majority need a connection to the vehicle with proper equipment, which is what makes this a job rather than a instruction sheet.
I bought a key online. Can you program it?
Often yes, provided it is the correct part for your vehicle and the quality is adequate. Cheap blanks are the most common reason a programming attempt fails, and that time is still chargeable. Sending us the part number before you buy avoids the wasted money.
How long does programming take?
Adding a key when you already have one working is often quick. All keys lost takes longer, and some vehicles impose a fixed security wait during the process that cannot be shortened by any locksmith or dealer. The expected time is given with the quote.
Will programming a new key erase my old ones?
It depends on the vehicle and on what you want. Some systems require all keys to be present and reprogrammed together, which erases anything absent. Others simply add the new key. If your keys were stolen, erasing the old ones is the point, and we confirm your intention before starting.
Do you program push to start fobs?
